If you are a parent or student looking into the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), you have likely heard the term "IA" floating around. It stands for Internal Assessment, and in the sciences - particularly Biology - it can sound like a daunting prospect. How do I design my own experiment? How do I do high-level biology in an online school? At Aoba Global Campus, we hear these questions often. The truth is, the Biology IA isn't just a requirement; it's actually one of the most rewarding parts of the IBDP. It is the moment when students stop reading about science and start doing it. To help our current and prospective families understand exactly what this project entails, we’ve put together the visual guide below.

More Than Just a Grade: Why the IA Matters
The IBDP Biology Internal Assessment accounts for around 20% of a student's final Biology grade. But its value goes far beyond a simple score. Traditional education often relies on memorizing facts from a textbook. The IBDP Biology IA flips that script. It requires students to find a topic that sparks their genuine curiosity - whether that's the effect of microplastics on local plant growth, or analyzing global health databases to find patterns in disease. By designing their own methodology, dealing with messy real-world data, and writing a formal scientific paper, students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and resilience. These are exactly the skills top-tier universities and future employers are looking for.
The Aoba Advantage: Solving the "Online Science" Challenge
One of the most frequent questions we hear from families and students is about how practical science requirements can be met while studying fully online. At Aoba Global Campus, we haven't just solved this problem - we've turned it into a unique advantage. We recognize that our global student body has diverse needs, locations, and learning styles. That is why we offer two distinct pathways for completing the Biology IA:
Pathway A: The Tokyo In-Practicum Experience
For students who crave hands-on laboratory experience and face-to-face collaboration, we offer an immersive practicum at our Tokyo campus. During this intensive period, online students travel to Aoba's high school campus in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, in order to utilize our professional-grade laboratory equipment. It’s an incredible opportunity to put on a lab coat, work with advanced tools, and receive immediate, in-the-room guidance from our experienced science faculty. Just as importantly, it allows our online students to meet their peers in person, strengthening friendships and a strong sense of community. This optional, in-person experience is open to a limited number of students each semester, and spaces fill up fast!
Pathway B: The Fully Online Assessment
Not every student can or wants to travel to Tokyo, and in the 21st century, they shouldn't have to in order to do great science. Modern scientific research frequently happens behind a computer screen or out in the field, rather than in a lab with a microscope. Our innovative virtual pathway allows students to complete their IA from anywhere in the world. Students can utilize cutting-edge virtual lab simulations, execute safe and rigorous fieldwork in their own local environments, or engage in complex data analysis using massive public databases (such as climate records or epidemiological data). This pathway teaches highly relevant, modern digital research skills that are deeply respected by universities.
Your Journey, Your Choice
At Aoba Global Campus, our goal is to remove the barriers to a world-class IB education. The Biology IA shouldn't be a source of stress; it should be a capstone achievement that you are deeply proud of. Whether you are measuring carbon dioxide output in our Tokyo labs or analyzing global ecological data from your living room, our expert faculty are here to guide you through every step of your IBDP Biology journey.
